8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Presented by:
Regina E. Morgan, Investigator
U.S. Department of Justice
Civil Rights Division, Disability Rights Section

Synopsis: The recent media reports showing both law enforcement officers and correctional officers involved in negative interactions with persons with physical or mental disabilities has highlighted the need for training criminal justice professionals to appropriately and legally respond to individuals within this demographic. Ms. Morgan and other officials with the U.S. Department of Justice will be at Wichita State University to provide training on legally appropriate responses to situations involving the disabled, answer questions about specific concerns from course participants, and discuss the consequences of failing to respond appropriately to citizens with special needs.

Target Audience: All criminal justice professionals will be welcomed on both dates and will benefit from the training provided on both dates. However, the presenters have suggested that they will be prepared to target those issues more common to law enforcement officers and law enforcement administration on Monday the 3rd, and focus on issues associated with corrections, medical staff, parole and probation on Tuesday.
